MEMORANDUM
TO: Hiring Manager
FROM: Jorge Saro
DATE: June 10, 2015
SUBJECT: Gathered Industry-Related Information
Throughout the academic year, I talked to many different students, professors, and alumni about the computer science industry and how my current work at Cal Poly would transfer into a working environment. In one of my classes we had a guest speaker that worked for the government in web security. From the speech he gave that day, there was something that I heard and found interesting. He had a position for a company that allowed him to travel all over the world to various different companies to debug, hack, or improve their general web defense. As well as enlightening me about a job that sounded extremely appealing, I also learned that, although I know I want to be in computer science, I still don't know exactly in what computer science related field I want to be in; thanks to that speaker, I have kept an open mind looking for different job opportunities that peek my interest.
Another speaker a few weeks after was the founder of White Hat, a leading web security company that focuses on hacking large companies like Amazon and Ebay, then telling them their weaknesses so that the company can fix these chinks in their security. This speaker started to show my one example of companies within the web security field. As a result, I plan to join the White Hat Club that is on campus so that I can improve my skills in web security and increase my connections employees and future employees of White Hat.
In addition to socially gathering information, I also spent much of my own time researching the many different positions that I am interested in working as. Once I had a nice list of positions, I started to look into good companies that offered entry-level jobs for those positions. Those companies include White Hat, Activison, Bungie, 2k Games, and a few more.
As I continue my college career, I want to focus my effort in the direction of these possible jobs, making myself a better candidate for those jobs in particular. In addition, I will continue to check back for more openings in local companies so that I can start getting field related job experience and use that as a stepping stone into much large companies.
